Hiroyuki Masuyama - Between Light and Shadow

Hiroyuki Masuyama’s artistic practice is rooted in a profound relationship with nature, developed from childhood through direct observation of the life cycles of plants, animals, and insects. This connection translates into a continuous reflection on fundamental questions of existence, which the artist explores through a practice that bridges sensory perception and cosmic thought.

From 2010 onwards, his inquiry has expanded metaphorically towards the universe, giving form to works that investigate the relationship between time, space and transformation. Immersive installations and works combining painting and light recreate visions of the cosmos, making the timely starlight stratification perceptible and questioning the notions of “here” and “now”.

In parallel, Masuyama develops a practice grounded in the daily observation of natural phenomena. Through the systematic recording of shadows cast by growing plants, the artist constructs drawings that function as traces of time, akin to long-exposure photography. In these works, as well as in compositions created by cut-out forms on transparent paper, the continuous cycle of birth, growth, and dissolution becomes clearly evident.

Using light and shadow as primary materials, Masuyama visually translates the interdependence of matter, time and space. His practice becomes an attempt to manifest the endless transformation that permeates all forms of existence, from the microcosm to the macrocosm.
