Within the Italian art scene, the exhibition “IoNonRappresentoNullaIoDipingo”, curated by Maurizio Fagiolo dell’Arco at Studio La Città in February–March 1973, represents the true starting point of Analytical Painting.
Marco Meneguzzo’s essay traces the brief but intense period of analytical painting through the seminal works of four leading figures: Rodolfo Aricò, Carlo Battaglia, Giorgio Griffa and Claudio Verna.
Taking the famous title-slogan as its starting point, the text analyses the clear break with earlier abstraction and the emergence of a new awareness, in which the pure act of painting becomes a mental and anthropological process, a way of asserting one’s presence in the world.
