Ettore Spalletti is a master of contemporary art whose work straddles the boundary between painting and sculpture, translating the classical legacy of the Renaissance and modern abstraction into a refined exploration of light, volume and space. His work is rooted in a rigorous yet poetic perceptual sensibility, in which monochrome becomes an atmospheric metaphor for the experience of landscape. Through the use of pure pigments applied in thin layers that dissolve geometry, and the incorporation of precious materials such as alabaster, marble, gold leaf and onyx, Spalletti evokes iconic hues such as the blue of the sky, the shifting pink of the flesh and a welcoming grey. Born in Cappelle sul Tavo in 1940, he has, since the 1970s, developed a unique artistic language, celebrated by prestigious international institutions — from the Guggenheim in New York to the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, right through to the major retrospective in 2014 held at the MAXXI, the MADRE and the GAM — and cemented by his historic participations in Documenta in Kassel and the Venice Biennale.
