Esther Mathis | Isolated Systems

Esther Mathis is a Swiss artist whose practice straddles the boundary between scientific inquiry and poetic imagination, exploring the complex relationships between humankind and nature, chaos and order. Her work is based on the use of fundamental scientific principles — such as entropy, electrical conductivity, and the reflection and refraction of light — which the artist transforms into visual metaphors for the human condition. Through the use of fragile, everyday materials such as ordinary glass or organic elements, Mathis creates site-specific installations and sculptures that play with optical illusions, energy flows and the layering of matter. Born in 1985, she trained at the IED in Milan, the SVA in New York and the ZHdK in Zurich, quickly making a name for herself on the international scene for her ability to give form to miniature ecosystems and labyrinths of light that make the invisible forces of the cosmos tangible.
