Hiroyuki Masuyama's solo show at Kunstforum Ingelheim

Von London nach Venedig: Whistler & Masuyama

This exhibition, marking the first major retrospective of his work in over twenty-five years, celebrates the revolutionary etchings produced in the late 19th century by the American master James McNeill Whistler, through a selection of around 125 exceptional etchings and lithographs.

The exhibition highlights Whistler’s evocative architectural views of London and Venice, juxtaposing them with intimate portraits of his personal circle: works that reveal the artistic sensibility hidden behind his eccentric personality.

In a brilliant transgenerational dialogue, the contemporary Japanese artist Hiroyuki Masuyama retraces Whistler’s footsteps, presenting photomontages that superimpose contemporary views onto historical prints, offering a tangible visualisation of space, time and change. The artistic journey is further enriched by a selection of traditional Japanese woodblock prints and prints by Whistler’s European contemporaries, which contextualise the profound stylistic influences of the era.
