Max Cole

Max Cole has for many years constructed her paintings from a series of parallel horizontal lines. Visually they lead outwards to infinite horizons, but they are married to a gentle sense of rising and falling, akin to the sensation of listening to polyphonic music. A close inspection reveals that these are certainly not ruler-drawn lines: they are full of slight hesitations, tiny variations of marks, handling, and pressure which, at a distance, lend the works their particular quivering stillness, their sense of mystery lying in wait.
